Lasting Impressions

After walking over to Pier 83 (between West 42nd and 43rd Streets), I had a little time to wait before the 11:30am ferry and noticed the floating museum that was the US aircraft carrier Intrepid. Massive and decked out with a variety of US aircraft. Managed to fire of a few photos from the sidewalk and added to these from the seaward side during the ferry trip. Even got some of the Concorde and an old submarine they have acquired. They are now chasing the Space Shuttle when it is retired and intend to park it alongside the existing attractions.

The ferry trip consisted of a full circle of Manhattan Island and allowed an opportunity to take some great photographs of the usual landmark scenes. Here are a few of the hundreds I took...

Lower Manhattan Water Taxi

After disembarking the ferry, I took a taxi to Ground Zero. A very emotional place and certainly somewhere to reflect. There is a huge amount of building works going on but so much still not done. The devastation must have been mind-blowing and you can still sense the tragedy even after nearly nine years.

One of the Towers was directly next to these remaining ones...

They have erected fences to restrict the views into the yawning hole where the Tower once stood..

They have started building on the site of the second Tower.

A montage of lasting images...

Well on that sombre note, I will finish this post. Tomorrow I must repack the suitcases and think about any last minute points of interest I want to see before checking out of the Giraffe and moving on to JFK for my Heathrow flight. Looking forward to catching up with family and friends - and not being on my own for a couple of weeks!
